Do you want a large camping van that you can stand up in? Or that can sleep more people? Or do you want something smaller, easier to maneuver and park that sleeps 2?
Something a lot of people don’t know is Oahu has a lot of narrow winding roads with beautiful scenery. Most parking spots are built for more “compact” vehicles and are limited, especially at the popular areas like beautiful beaches or attractions. Parking a large RV will be more of a challenge than a smaller one. Oahu is also home to 1 million people, and 10 million tourists come to the island every year. That is a lot of unfamiliar drivers who may also be easily distracted by the view while driving. Renting something large that you are not familiar with may be more stressful than renting something smaller that will feel a lot more like driving any other rental vehicle.
Depending on the camping van rental company, many offer different amenities. You’ll want to ask yourself some questions:
Am I planning on cooking my own meals? Or do I want to just have snacks and eat out most of the time. Do I want a fully integrated kitchen with a stove, sink, and cooler or fridge? Or is just a camp stove that I can move around good enough for me. Do I want a fully stocked kitchen with dishes, cookware, a coffee maker? Or do I have my own set I can bring?
What size of bed do I want? Does it come with pillows and linens or do I need to bring my own towels/sheets? Do I want a campervan with an additional power source, like a secondary battery or solar panels? Then I can charge my phone at night, and it may come with lights and a fridge, etc. Or maybe there is an rv that has hook ups, and that’ll work for me since I will be staying at a campsite with power hook ups.
There are not many camping van rentals in Hawaii that offer a bathroom since there are public restrooms every 10 minutes up the road, whether that is at a beach park or a shopping center. Also campgrounds have restrooms and showers. If a toilet is a dealbreaker for you then your search has just become that much easier.
Easy question right? What is your budget? It may be easier to write down the total of how much you’d want to spend vs how much per night. Some campervans advertise $150/night but then have additional fees like cleaning fees, amenities fees, delivery fees, insurance, etc. While others advertise $100/night and will have everything included. When you find a camping van rental you like that seems within your budget, head through to the totals page to make sure you didn’t find yourself buried in fees and taxes.
So many different designs. But have they been thoroughly thought through? Does the build make sense, has it been tested for comfort and ease of use?
Camping vans with beds in the back where you can open the doors and see the stars. But have you thought about all of the mosquitoes, cockroaches and flies that will come in? You’ll want to make sure they provide insect screens to really enjoy the experience.
Camping vans with the kitchen inside the vehicle next to the bed. Is there enough room for you to stand, move around and cook? Is there ventilation for cooking things like bacon?
Camping vans with the kitchen in the trunk of the vehicle. What if it rains? Do they have some form of covering so you can still cook and not get all wet?
Does the camping van have storage for things like luggage? Food? Surf boards?
Does it have a safe to keep things like my passport and wallet hidden? Does it have privacy curtains for sleeping at night and also to hide my things during the day
The last thing you will want to stress about is how to use your RV. Ask the camping van rental company if they offer a manual, whether it’s a booklet or videos to prepare you for your stay. Some offer really nice amenities, but along with that comes things to learn how to operate as well.
You’ll probably be taking lots of pictures and videos of your camping van rental experience. Do you want to have a camper that looks super rad? Or maybe you prefer the benefits of having a stealth looking vehicle. Sometimes the vehicle may look stealth and simple on the outside, but once you open the doors the inside looks “sick”…!
